Bushi - Trading Card concept

Bushi (武士) is a Japanese term that refers to the warrior class of feudal Japan, most commonly associated with the samurai. Unlike the modern word senshi (戦士), which generally means “warrior” or “soldier,” bushi carries a deeper historical and cultural significance, tied to honor, discipline, and the way of the warrior (bushidō). I created Bushi as a self-given project to explore storytelling through a different medium. The idea was to design a trading card collection/card game concept where each card represents a different type of warrior class that existed in Japan. Each card includes not only an illustration but also a short background about that class and some game-style stats to make it more engaging and fun. This project was also a personal milestone for me — it was the first time in a long while that I picked up drawing again. I’m not always fully satisfied with my drawings, but in this case, I found that the imperfections and “wrong” strokes gave the illustrations a unique texture and detail that felt true to the spirit of the project. Rather than striving for flawless execution, I embraced the roughness, which ended up making the visuals more alive and distinctive.
